Your braces are cemented to your teeth and installed in your mouth to gradually realign the positions of your teeth. This is done by adjusting the tension in your braces to stretch the periodontal ligaments that are anchoring your teeth in their sockets. This tension is progressive. Timely and consistent adjustment sessions are critical for keeping the treatment to a minimum.

Each adjustment appointment will involve an inspection of the braces. Spacers, bands, or any other piece of hardware that’s suffered some wear and tear will be replaced. It’s not uncommon for a spacer to come loose right before a scheduled adjustment session. If this happens, you should let your orthodontist, Dr. Daniel Adams, know so he can plan to replace it. This often involves setting up an earlier adjustment appointment.

Otherwise, you should expect to have an adjustment appointment every four to six weeks, or as needed.

If you struggle to effectively clean your teeth and braces with brushing and flossing, you should ask Dr. Daniel Adams any oral hygiene questions you might have.
