At Full Smile Orthodontics, Dr. Daniel Adams and our team are pleased to provide comprehensive orthodontics for our patients in Carlsbad, California. Today’s blog is going to go over how to keep wires and brackets from properly cleaning your teeth while aligning them in braces.

Brushing 101

Naturally, everyone knows how important it is to practice strong oral hygiene habits to keep teeth (and gums) healthy. But when you are wearing braces to straighten your smile, it is even more crucial to maintain proper cleaning for a healthy mouth. This is because brackets and wires can trap food particles and harbor bacteria that lead to tooth decay and gum disease.

We recommend brushing your teeth whenever you eat–including meals and snacks–instead of the usual twice a day routine. You can use a manual toothbrush or an electric/battery powered toothbrush, whichever works best for you. Be sure to use a soft-bristled brush, and carefully clean each tooth around the brackets and gumline. Start with the gumline, then brush up and down around each bracket, and rinse thoroughly after brushing to make sure all oral debris is removed.

But what if you are snacking or dining away from home and without a toothbrush? You can still remove some food particles and debris after eating by rinsing well with water or mouthwash. Be sure to follow up with a thorough tooth brushing as soon as you are able.

Flossing 101

Next, once you have brushed your teeth, you will want to follow up with flossing, at the very least once a day. You will want to clean those areas between the teeth as well as the tooth surfaces beneath the wires. The best thing to do is find a flossing method that works best for you, and use it! There are a variety of flossing tools at your disposal, such as waxed dental floss, threaded floss, oral irrigation, interdental brushes or even orthodontic floss which is specifically designed to clean around your brackets and wires.

Clean your teeth carefully while you wear braces, and you will achieve a healthy, beautiful smile.
